Windows Suits Different Needs than OS X

I really love Windows 7, but I also like OS X and Linux. I was surfing the web and found this post:

”Why I love Windows 7, hate Linux, and think the Mac is lame”

I don’t agree with him, even though I too love Windows 7. I guess you can say to each their own. But his views about OS X are a bit off.

Comparing Windows and OS X cultures is like comparing of apples and oranges. True there are more business oriented applications for windows, but on the other hand OS X has more applications that a wide array of disciplined people use. That may not be the best explanation, but it’s the best I could come up with.

Windows 7 Brings the Wows (that Vista didn’t)

The more I use Windows 7 the more I love it. Now I do like Vista, unlike a lot of people, and actually hate XP. I really think the super taskbar or superbar ups the ante on program organization, *cough* OS X *cough*.

A Cheaper Apple TV Would be Nice (Nix the HDD)

I’ve recently been buying more movies from the iTunes Store and I really like my Apple TV, because of the convenience it provides. I would like to get another one, however I would prefer a cheaper version.

I bought the 40GB model, but I don’t need a 40GB hard drive. I don’t store anything on my current ATV except the occasional rented movie. The hard drive is basically going to waste. Something like 8GB of flash memory would suffice. I won’t buy another Apple TV until Apple releases a cheaper one with out a hard drive.

Image Manipulation Programs: My Thoughts

I decided to write this post because I was watching a Youtube video of someone explaining GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) for OS X. I’ve been using GIMP for a while on Ubuntu Linux. Though It seemed like they were explaining features of GIMP as amazing for a free program. For example cutting/copying sections of images from one image to another. Well they must not use Windows that much because it comes with a great basic image manipulation program – Paint.

I’ve started using (Mac) OS X more lately on my Mac Mini, in fact I’m using it to write this post. Something I knew about OS X and didn’t surprise me for some reason is that OS X doesn’t come with a basic image program like windows.

I’ve used Photoshop a bit and I like it, but they sell it for too much for it. Of course it costs so much because with the best version at the base package of it (Photoshop CS3, omitting Elements) you get tons of other “stuff.” I say stuff in quotes because it’s all stuff I don’t care about and would rather not HAVE to pay for it. Why can’t I just get Photoshop?

I’m added this part on the 21st, because I forgot to say how I actually felt about GIMP. GIMP is a great and best of all free image maniputlation program. It has most of the features of Photoshop. GIMP is fine for me because it says what I get in the acronymized name and that’s all I want. Paint is also a great free, basic, unfortnatly only for Windows program. Ubuntu Linux comes with GIMP and Windows comes with Paint, but OS X comes with nothing I wonder why?

A message to Adobe: sell Photoshop from the CS3 package by itself! I bet you’ll make more money that way.

Trial and Error (I Love WP 2.6)

Yesterday, as of now, I’ve started fiddling around with the theme editor in WordPress. I also recently updated my WordPress install to 2.6 and I have to say the theme preview is my favorite addition. My foray into custom themes, however successfulit proves to be, is due to the addition of semi-live previews. The theme preview feature uses the data from your actually blog to generate a simulation of how it will look. I don’t have to take my theme live now to see how my attpempt at coding fares. Right now my theme’s not looking too good. Hopfully I can improve it.

So I applaud the people in the WordPress software team for a great addition to a great piece of software. It’s getting late. I should get to bed.

[UPDATE] I have abandoned creating my own theme, for now, but I still love 2.6.

WP Favicon Manager Plug-in

I just found a great plug-in for WordPress it allows you to easily add a favicon to your blog and RSS feed of your blog. The one I used is the blue WordPress logo that can be found here, I got it from my WordPress hosted blog.

Smiling Faces

Tonight I put a picture on my main sites homepage. It’s an image of a face made with ASCII characters. The directions to making it are on the image itself and the alternate text. As far as I know this is a Windows only face.

Wi-Fi: The Under-Appreciated Wireless Standard (Except to Apple)

Everyone seems to be using Wi-Fi these days, but what do they mostly use it in, in mobile devices. Wi-Fi is ideal for mobile devices. I titled this entry the way I titled it because (other than iMac and Mac Mini users) Wi-Fi is underappreciated in desktops. I use Wi-Fi in everything I can get it in including my primary desktop. I use Wi-Fi so much because I hate wires.

I’m not completely sure why Wi-Fi isn’t used in desktops, but I think it’s because Wi-Fi isn’t trusted. Both in security and in connection reliability. I don’t know about security because I live in an area that I don’t worry about people connecting to my network, though reliability isn’t as much of a problem as some people think. Sure I have some problems with my current (Linksys) wireless router, which I hope to upgrade at sometime to a Time Capsule. If you have decent hardware you shouldn’t have a dropped signal which I havn’t had with this router. The problem I’ve been having, if your wondering, is with the speed of the connection dropping over time.

I think it’s great that Apple includes Wi-Fi (or Airport) cards in their desktops. I think it shows that Apple understands how freeing it is to only worry about if you can get power to your desktop. On the iMacs, if you use Wi-Fi, the power cord is the only cord you have running away from your computer. And something I noticed, on the online Apple Store, is that the bluetooth mouse and keyboard are cheaper when you buy them with the computer. I think Apple does becuase they do appreciate wireless connectivity and no one else does.
